The garage often serves as a storage area for more than just a car. However, homeowners often feel so comfortable stashing items out of sight and into the garage that it starts to look cluttered and disorganized. Before it transforms into a hoarding space, get your act together and start organizing with these effective ideas.
Sort and Categorize
It is highly recommended to sort all items first. Create categories like sports, toys, tools, winter, and more. Consolidate items in the same category in one section of the garage. For example, keep all paint, thinners, varnishes, and the like in a cabinet or a high shelf where it can’t be accessed by children and pets.
Add Storage
This could be cabinets, shelves, or racks. You may also purchase storage bins and boxes but make sure you sort your items first to help you determine the type and size you have to buy. If your budget does not allow for new installations, opt for cheaper alternatives. Use old cardboard boxes for items that do not easily deteriorate. Old mason jars with lids are perfect for storing leftover paint, nails, and screws. Install hooks for items that can be hung. For fabrics, use vacuum storage bags to keep them protected from moisture, mold, and bugs. These also help save space when compressed.
Label Bins and Boxes
If you must keep items in storage boxes and bins, label them. This will make it easier for you to know where you should store an item. It makes it easier as well to know where you can find what you need. It does not have to anything fancy. You can use a sharpie and some tape just as long as each label is readable and not easily erased. There are also label stickers available in DIY and scrapbooking stores.
Install Low-maintenance Floors
Interlocking floor mats may look cool on a garage floor but it can be a challenge to clean. Instead, resurface the garage floor with epoxy floor coatings. These can easily be applied to bare concrete. An epoxy flooring is a lot more durable and resistant to stains, abrasion, and more. Also, garage floor epoxy’s nonporous property makes it easier to clean and maintain. Dirt, dust and spilled liquids stay at the surface, ready to be wiped and swept clean. And when the floor is clean, the entire garage looks clean and decluttered.
